First of all, Happy Valentine’s Day! This is my first V-Day married and it is awesome. We both took the day off and we are enjoying doing life at our own speed today. So far we’ve slept in, went out for breakfast, browsed Hobby Lobby and Best Buy. Life just goes too fast most of the time, and today we are making life slow down. We aren’t doing anything special, not because we’re anti-Valentine’s or anything, but because our first anniversary is coming up so soon, we didn’t want to overspend.

On an unrelated note, I found this post and tutorial about how to make a diorama of your house a few months ago and I’ve been wanting to try it out for myself ever since.I thought it was absolutely adorable. Having a ‘cartoon’ of your house… inside your house! And, whenever we move, we’ll be able to take this with us to remember our wonderful first few years of wedded bliss πŸ™‚

I figured it would be one of those things that looks easier than it really is and it would probably be something I’d get frustrated with and quit right in the middle. But, I was surprised at how easy this was and how great it turned it out! I also figured it would be a multiple session project, but I did everything in about 3 hours.

This is the picture of our house that I used:

Here’s how it turned out:

You can see the ‘3D’-ness of it better here:

I followed this tutorial exactly. The way she explains the layers is perfect. I traced mine on some paper, then cut those pieces out to use as a guide for cutting the real deal. I saved the pieces for later – I might make some seasonal ones to go into a bigger frame.

I cut out trees to add to the sides, but the more I tinkered with it, the more I liked the simplicity of just the house. The trees are really cute in this post, but I just decided to leave them out of mine. I did try to add a few special things about our house that mean a lot to me: the blue hydrangea bush below the kitchen window, the always-changing wreath on the front door, and our mischievous cat peeking out the window.

This would make a great wedding or housewarming gift. I think I might also use this idea for some Christmas gifts this year πŸ™‚
